Scholarships for Students from Bismarck

[] Alton Carl Wolfer Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Fund was established in 1999 in loving memory of Alton Wolfer by his wife Haidako. Mr. Wolfer passed away on August 27, 1999 after a valiant, 10-year battle with cancer.

Al was born in Linton, ND and raised in Bismarck. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1955. He excelled at sports and academics. He later joined the US Navy. He served in Key West, Florida and Tapei, Taiwan, where he met his and married his life-partner and soul mate, Haidako, in 1960.

Upon leaving the Navy, Al graduated from Bismarck Junior College, where he served as student body president and then went on to NDSU to earn his B.S. in 1964. He taught social studies and coached football at Bismarck High School from 1964-67. Next, he took his young family which now included three daughters, Deb, Daphne, and Carmen to Logan, Utah to earn his M.S. in Social Science at Utah State University. In 1968 they moved to St. Cloud, where he joined the faculty at St. Cloud State University.

During his 31 years at SCSU, he helped found the Tri-College East Asian Studies Program and served as chairperson of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department. He and Haidako spent much time abroad studying and teaching. He earned a Doctorate of Education in Teaching from the University of North Dakota in 1980.

Bismarck High Students may apply for the scholarship. Preference will be given to students who are the first in their family to pursue a college education, and who have demonstrated high moral character, leadership qualities and an interest in world affairs. Students must have maintained at least a 3.00 average on a 4.00 = “A” scale.

[] Bismarck Schools Scholarship

The Bismarck Schools Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 by an anonymous donor who wanted to encourage others to help Bismarck students go to college.

To financially assist a graduating senior from each of the public high schools—Bismarck High and Century High Schools. Selection will be based on academic achievement, need and school performance indicating probable success in higher education. The principal of each high school will assist NDCF by recommending recipients.

[] Chris Traeholt Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 1990 in memory of Chris Traeholt who died as a result of a motorcycle accident in April, 1990. At the time of his death, Chris was a senior at Century High School with plans to pursue a degree in engineering at NDSU.

The scholarship will assist a student from the Bismarck Century High School who is planning to enroll in the engineering department at North Dakota State University. The award will be made in the fall of each year.

[] Curtis Stern Memorial Scholarship Fund

In tribute to the dedicated work of Curt Stern, the National Sunflower Association board of directors established a memorial scholarship in his name. Donations from the sunflower industry and friends of Curt Stern have allowed for that Scholarship to be funded and opened for applicants. The fund will be administered by the ND Community Foundation and a committee consisting of NSA members. The Fund will assist students who study in the field of agriculture with special emphasis on sunflower production, promotion or research.

The initial purpose of the Fund is to financially assist students who are interested in the field of agriculture with special emphasis on sunflower production, promotion or research. Preference will be given to students who are in their last two years of undergraduate studies or in graduate level studies and have maintained at least a cumulative 3.0 gpa on a 4.0=A scale. Application deadline is May 15th and will be awarded by July 15th. The award amount may vary each year, but will be at least $1,000.

[] Donald B. Sass Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 1985 in memory of Donald B. Sass by his wife, Cleone and the Landmans' Association of North Dakota. A native of Montana, Don graduated from Billings High School. In 1940, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. During his five year stint in the Corps, Don was active in the Pacific Theatre and attained the rank of Captain. After the war he enrolled in the University of Montana. Upon his graduation from law school in 1950, he began a law practice in Sidney, Montana. Shortly after Amerada Petroleum Corporation discovered oil in North Dakota, Don joined Amerada, first as a contract landman and then as a company junior landman. During his 20 year tenure with Amerada, Don was promoted to landman, ND District Landman (1962) and finally Regional Land Services Manager in 1969. In 1971, he resigned his position with Amerada and became an independent based in Williston. During the next 10 years, his business evolved into Mineral Land Services. Mr. Sass was a noted Williston community leader and was posthumously named 1984 Landman of the Year by the Landman's Association of North Dakota.

The award will be made in the fall of each year and the recipient must have graduated from a North Dakota high school. The scholarship will assist upper class or post-graduate men and women in a college/university level field of study relating to the oil and gas industry. Fields of study may include, but are not limited to, petroleum land management, petroleum engineering, geology, geological engineering, chemical engineering, economics/finance, vocational training relating to the oil industry and law.

[] Edgar Bollinger Memorial Scholarship

The Fund was established in 1991 by Eleonore Bollinger, other family members and friends. Mr. Bollinger was a long-time Business Education Instructor at Bismarck State College.

Applicant must be a graduating senior from Bismarck High School who is planning to pursue a course of study in Business Education. Students must be in good standing at Bismarck High School and engaged in the study of Business Education. The Selection Committee includes the school principal and a Business Education teacher.

[] Guy Larson Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 1992 in memory of Guy Larson by his family and the Bismarck Rotary Club. Mr. Larson was prominent in Bismarck and the State of North Dakota for many years having been a teacher of music, owner of a music business, a state legislator, and active in civic affairs including Rural Development. A Rotarian since January, 1960, Mr. Larson held offices in the Bismarck Rotary Club including the Club Presidency in 1967-68 and in 1971-72 was Governor of Rotary District 558 which includes clubs in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Manitoba, Canada.

The scholarship will assist a graduating senior from the Bismarck High School who might otherwise have difficulty in attending a post-secondary institution. The scholarship shall be used for tuition and the recipient shall be planning a major/minor in music and has participated in the Bismarck High School music department with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

[] Harold Kepler Music Camp Scholarship

The fund was established in 1990 by Adelene Kepler in loving memory of her late husband who was the first band director at Century High School. Mr. Kepler began teaching music in 1949 and was the band director at Century High School from 1975 until his retirement in 1986. He was known to the Bismarck community as "Mr. Music". He directed the El Zagal Plainsmen, the Bismarck Elks Band, McCabe Methodist Church Choir, and was song leader for the Kiwanis Men's Club. He was a participant with State Legion Band and served on numerous music committees and organizations.

The scholarship will assist band students from Bismarck Century High School with one-half of the registration fee for the International Music Camp. The NDCF shall reimburse the Camp directly after the student has completed the course of study.

The selection criteria are as follows: Student must be an underclassman at Century High as of March 1; must plan to enroll with the band program the next school year; must be an active participant with the concert or prep band programs; and must have maintained a letter grade of an A or equivalent in band.

[] Jim & Barbara Blaine Scholarship

The Jim and Barbara Blaine Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 by Mr. and Mrs. Blaine. James S. Blaine was born in Mott, ND and attended school through high school graduation there. He participated in sports and musical groups. He graduated from Jamestown College in 1962 and did additional work at Black Hills State College and North Dakota State University. His teaching and coaching career included positions at Bowbells, Langdon, and Century High School. He coached football, basketball and track.

At Century High School, Jim taught algebra, geometry, and physics. He was active in Science Olympiad and coached sophomore boy’s basketball and junior varsity girl’s basketball. He still can be seen running the scoring table at Century HS sporting events. He retired from teaching in 1995.

Barbara Ann (Gunderson) Blaine grew up on a farm near Hitterdal, Minnesota. She graduated from Hitterdal High in 1960 and Moorhead State University in 1963. She later earned a Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University in 1970.

Barbara’s teaching career spanned 33 years and began in Watford City, North Dakota. She also taught at Mandan High. She began her counseling career in Langdon and in 1979 became a guidance counselor at Century. Barbara was also student council advisor, senior class advisor, Knowledge Master Open coordinator, and Horatio Alger Program coordinator. She retired from her education career in 1996.

The Blaine’s believe in the value of education. Century High School students and staff will always have a special place in their hearts.

Graduating seniors from Century High School may apply for the scholarship. Preference will be given to students who are descendants of present and former Century High School Staff. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 = A scale. Other criteria to be considered include a balance of academic achievement and co-curricular activities. The recipient must have attended Century for 2 of 3 high school years. Grants will be paid upon successful completion of the first semester/quarter of the student’s freshman college year.

[] Kathy Eggmann Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in memory of Kathy by her parents. Kathy was a student at Bismarck's Century High School before her tragic death in an automobile accident in the spring of 1988. Kathy had been a student at a Fargo high school and was returning from a visit to Fargo when she was a victim of the accident just outside of Bismarck.

The scholarship will assist a graduating senior from Century High School who is active in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). The award will be paid in the fall and is based on need and ability.

[] Kenneth & Leila Morris Dental Scholarship

The fund was established in 1982 by Leila Morris in loving memory of her late husband who practiced dentistry in Bismarck for many years. When establishing the scholarship, Mrs. Morris indicated she wanted to help young people interested in dentistry to fulfill their educational aspirations and that her late husband would have wanted the same.

Priorities for this scholarship are as follows:
1. First priority is for students from the Bismarck-Mandan area who are third of fourth year students of dentistry.
2. If there are no applicants from the Bismarck-Mandan area in any given year, the scholarship may be awarded to a student of dentistry from anywhere in North Dakota.
3. If according to the previous two preferences there are no eligible applicants, the scholarship may be awarded to a student of medicine from the Bismarck-Mandan area or if no applicants from the Bismarck-Mandan area, then statewide.

[] Lisa Kraft Memorial Scholarship Fund

The fund was established in 1999 by Bert and Deb Kraft in loving memory of their daughter Lisa Marie Kraft. Lisa Kraft graduated from SCHS in 1992. She was an exemplary student who brightened everyone's days and made those around her laugh. Tragically, Lisa died in a plane crash on October 26, 1994 at the age of 21. The scholarship is to financially assist students from SCHS in continuing their education.


- Applicants must have completed a minimum of 2 credits at South Central High School
- Scholarship recipient must complete 1 semester of higher education with a 2.0 GPA within 12 months of graduation.
- Upon successful completion of 1 semester, recipient must forward a copy of his or her transcript to the North Dakota Community Foundation showing the completion of that semester with a 2.0 GPA.

[] Muriel R. Hyden Memorial Scholarship

The Fund was established in April, 1997 by Tom Hyden and Robyn Harrison in loving memory of Tom's mother, Muriel R. Hyden. Muriel never wanted to do anything but teach. She was born in Mohall, ND on October 8, 1919, the daughter of Ludwig & Alma (Jordahl) Rockne. She graduated from Mohall High School in 1937 and North Dakota State University in 1941. She earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Home Economics with teacher certification. She was the third generation of her family to teach.
Muriel taught Home Economics in Cavalier, Washburn and at the State Industrial School in Mandan. She spent several years teaching in eastern Oregon where she met and married Thomas Kit Hyden in 1948. They had a son, Thomas in 1951. When she lost her husband in a car accident in 1953, Muriel moved to Bismarck to raise her son. When Thomas started school, Muriel took a teaching job in Minnesota where she taught home economics for 12 years. She returned to North Dakota in 1969 and taught for the next 17 years in Jamestown. In 1977 Muriel was named "North Dakota State Vocational Teacher of the Year."
Muriel retired in 1986 and moved back to Bismarck. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the American Association of University Women, the American Vocational Association, and Sons of Norway.
Muriel had a life-long love of learning. She was an avid reader. She traveled widely throughout the United States, as well as visiting Norway and West Africa. Her hobbies included sewing and knitting. She continued to share her talents with others as an active volunteer at Good Shepherd, MedCenter One and the North Dakota State Heritage Center.

Preference will be given to students who are majoring in education, are at least sophomores in college and have a GPA of between 3.0 and 3.5 on a 4.0 = A Scale. The scholarship must be used for tuition at any institution of higher learning.

[] North Dakota Military Scholarship Fund

In February 1991, a Soldiers Relief Fund was established within the North Dakota Community Foundation to seek contributions from organizations and individuals within the Bismarck/Mandan area to assist National Guard and Army Reserve families who would be experiencing family emergencies or temporary financial problems due to the mobilization of these forces for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The swiftness of the end to these operations left a sum of money not needed as supposed. On May 16, 1991 the North Dakota Military Scholarship Fund was established with the NDCF with the remaining money.

Bismarck and Mandan Guard and Reserve members are eligible according to the guidelines below. The scholarship must be used for tuition at any institution of higher learning in the State of North Dakota, or any institution in any state which has tuition reciprocity with North Dakota. Financial need and academic ability are two factors which will be considered in making a decision as to the recipient. The recipient should intend to be a full-time student.

The following priorities will be used in the order listed:
1. Individuals who served on active duty between August 2, 1990 and the cease fire date with priority given to the military personnel who were stationed in the Middle East.
2. Spouses and children of those who served in the Middle East
3. Military personnel who were on active duty elsewhere in the world
Spouses and children of military personnel who were on active duty elsewhere in the world.
At such time as the above-stated guidelines no longer produce eligible applicants, the scholarship may be given to other active ND Guard and Reserve members, or their dependents, with first priority to the Bismarck Mandan area personnel.

[] Paulie Paul Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 1996 in loving memory of Paulie by her family with memorial gifts from her many friends and family members. Her daughters, Casey and Kelly, were both graduates of Century High School. Paulie died in the spring of 1996 at the age of 44 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Paulie was born in Minot to Arnold and Madelyn Alme. Her first years were spent on a farm near Balfour and later she moved to Riverdale with her family. The family moved to Minot where she graduated from Bishop Ryan High School in 1970. She attended Minot State College and later graduated from the University of North Dakota. Paulie loved to travel, downhill ski, golf, play volleyball and run her own picture framing business "Picture Perfect". She volunteered for the Girl Scouts, American Cancer Society, Norsk Hostfest and the Century High School Parent Advisory Committee.

The applicant should have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0=A scale. The selection committee will also consider the students volunteer community service activities, financial need and experience in dealing with cancer in the applicant's family, i.e. parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles. The scholarship must be used for tuition at any institution of higher learning.

[] Robert C. Peske Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 1990 in memory of Robert C. Peske who was the owner of Noble Insurance Adjustment and was the manager of Community Homes of Bismarck. Although he did not play a musical instrument, he loved music and dreamed of becoming a musician. According to his family, he did not miss a single Bismarck High School Band Concert.

The scholarship will assist a graduating senior who is a member of the Bismarck High School Stage Band. The recipient will be chosen for outstanding contributions to the Stage Band, both musically and for the extra effort which has inspired others for the betterment of the Stage Band. Selection will be through a secret ballot by the members of the BHS Stage Band.

[] Tom Sturdevant Memorial Scholarship

The Tom Sturdevant Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1990 by the family and from memorials received at the time of Tom's death from a heart attack in January, 1990. At the time of his death, Tom was married and had three young children. He had been a teacher since 1980, teaching Physical Education at Bismarck's Pioneer Elementary School from 1986 to 1989, and from 1989 until his death was the Head Football Coach and taught Physical Education at Century High School. He wrote on his application to the Bismarck Public Schools, "One of the reasons I went into teaching was because I love young people."

The fund will assist a graduating senior from Bismarck Century High School. The recipient must be a student enrolled in grades 10-12 at Century High School, an athlete who plays above his potential and with “heart”, is involved with year round training, and participates in either football or track. The advisory committee will consist of Century High School Athletic Director and his appointees. The award will be made in the fall of each year.

The Tyler Herman Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Jeff and Kelli Herman in loving memory of their son Tyler Herman. The Fund will financially assist students from Bismarck, ND High Schools to further their education.

The primary purpose of the Fund will be to financially assist those students from Bismarck/Mandan Area High Schools who have lost either a parent or sibling. Preference will be given to students who attend Century or Bismarck High schools.

The fund was established with proceeds from a charitable gift annuity established by James and Anne Ryan during their lifetimes and maturing upon the death of Anne in the fall of 2009. The Fund will support the work of Catholic Charities, the University of Mary and Minot Catholic Schools.
