Scholarships for Students from Grafton

[] George H. Bliven Scholarship

The Fund was established in 1981 by memorial gifts from family and friends. Mr. Bliven was a banker by profession and was deeply interested and dedicated to the field of banking finance as well as to general business.

Applicant must be graduating senior of Grafton High School. Preference is given to those showing interest and potential in the fields of banking and finance or library science. Applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better.

[] Kiwanis-William Meier Scholarship

The Fund was established in 1966 by the Grafton Kiwanis Club in memory of one of its long-time members, W. F. (Bill) Meier. The scholarship was later endowed with the North Dakota Community Foundation. Mr. Meier was born in Ben Clair, South Dakota in 1905. He later lived in western North Dakota and moved to Grafton in 1940 where he established Grafton Paint and Glass, a family corporate store. Grafton Paint and Glass remained in business until the early 1990's. He was a successful businessman and was very active in community organizations and activities.

The award will be made after the student returns a copy of their first college semester transcript.

[] laPlante Family Scholarship

The laPlante Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 by Margaret laPlante to honor her family.

Graduating seniors from Grafton High School may apply for the scholarship. Applications must be turned in before April 1. Students must attend the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. The student must have maintained at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 = A scale during his/her senior year. The student must also show some evidence of financial need (there is a section in the form for the applicant to indicate financial need). The grant will be sent for the applicants second semester upon proof of successful completion of the first semester. Successful completion shall be defined as maintaining a 2.00 GPA on a 4.00 =A scale with a minimum 12 hour class load.

[] Lloyd & Martha Haas Scholarship Fund

Established with a gift from the estate of Lloyd Haas to assist Walsh County, North Dakota students who wish to study in field of medicine/nursing and who express an interest in returning to Walsh County to work. The Fund was inspired by Martha Haas who was a long-time nurse and worked for many years in Park River. Martha was known for her compassionate nature when providing care.

The purpose of the Fund is to financially assist Walsh County students with a preference for Park River High School students, who plan to study in the field of medicine and who plan to return to Walsh County. Preference will be given to students who are in their first year of study, exhibit financial need and have high academic credentials.

[] Noela Kingsbury Memorial Scholarship

The fund established in 1987 in memory of Noela Kingsbury by her husband, Harley Kingsbury. Harley was born in Farmington Township and at age 19, he began farming and has continued to farm throughout his entire life. He married Noela Glenn from Neche and together they raised five children. Noela was very active in the local community. She was a member of Ladies Aide, Women's Club and Eastern Star. Noela passed away in 1986.

The scholarship will assist a graduating senior from the Grafton High School who plans on attending a vocational school. The advisory committee consists of the superintendent, the principal and a vocational education teacher.

[] Theo Torgerson Memorial Scholarship

The Theo Torgerson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1985 through the Will of Mr. Torgerson who was a resident of Park River. Of Norwegian descent, he was interested in young people and was deeply respected by residents of Park River. When he was honored by the Walsh County Press with the Special Person Award, the Press said of him, "He is a friend-in-deed to everyone he chances to meet and many people have been favored by his helpful attitudes and friendly personality." Mr. Torgerson was killed in a three-car collision in Park River in September, 1984.

To financially assist students from Walsh County attending a public supported post secondary institution in North Dakota and who will be in the last two years of the educational process. The award will be made in the fall of each year.

[] Victor & Verna Johnson Scholarship Fund

The Victor and Verna Johnson Scholarship Fund was established with a gift from the Verna Johnson Estate in the year 2008. Victor and Verna Johnson farmed near Hoople and later resided in Park River during their retirement. They were both active in the Zion Lutheran Church of rural Hoople. Verna served as the Organist for the Church for 50 years. Victor and Verna both served on numerous local boards and volunteer positions. In addition, they were donors to a number of local projects and programs including the Park River First Care Health Center and the Park River Community Endowment Fund. The Fund will financially assist students from Walsh County North Dakota to continue their education.

Selection shall be based on the following:
1. Recipient must be a graduate of a Walsh County High School
2. Students must be in the last two years of the educational process (Junior or Senior in college).
3. Academic achievement and financial need shall be considered in awarding the scholarship.
4. Recipient must enroll as a full-time student (12 credit hours/semester).
5. First priority is for students from the Park River/Hoople area, however, multiple scholarships are given and applying is recommended for all Walsh county students who otherwise qualify.
