2001 Community Connection

There are twenty-one community funds operating as component funds of the North Dakota Community Foundation. The map highlights those communities that are building a substantial part of their future through a local community fund under the umbrella of the North Dakota Community Foundation. Each volume of the NDCF newsletter will feature one or two communities.

Ellendale Area  Community Foundation
Through the generosity of Mr. Frank Larson, the community of Ellendale was offered a $100,000 challenge to establish the Ellendale Area Community Foundation as a component fund of the North Dakota Community Foundation. This possibility stimulated excitement in the area and soon a group of civic leaders gathered to discuss how they could realize such a goal. North Dakota Community Foundation Development Director Amy Warnke was called upon to help organize the local board to meet the challenge. It is now two and a half years later and the Advisory Board of the Ellendale Area Community Foundation is proud to say that they have successfully met the challenge offered by Mr. Larson. These volunteers are truly a testament to what is possible, even in a small town in rural North Dakota, if interested and committed leaders put their heads together and work toward a common goal.
The group is now eligible for matching funds through the North Dakota Community Foundation on an annual basis. This will help ensure that the Fund continues to grow. The Advisory Board is now seeing the results of their efforts as they take applications for grants and deliver checks to worthy projects and/or programs in the Ellendale area. The staff of the North Dakota Community Foundation wishes to congratulate the community of Ellendale for the hard work and dedication they have put into making this project a success!

Hillsboro Community Future Fund
When residents and community leaders in Hillsboro were looking for a way to fund activities and projects in their area, little did they know they would be embarking upon a journey that eventually lead to an endowed fund. After months of planning, the Advisory Board of the Hillsboro Community Future Fund, together with the North Dakota Community Foundation, set forth to raise some money. Starting from scratch, this group of dedicated individuals has seen tremendous success. With a commitment from city leaders to match a portion of their fund raising, along with a match from the Otto Bremer Foundation, the Advisory Board was able to capitalize on these opportunities. A mere two years later, the Hillsboro Community Future Fund has a remarkable Fund balance of over $50,000, with multi-year pledges still coming in. They have now hired an Activities Director for the city, who also works on the Future Fund, and have a long-term plan of action. We look for great things from this community and dedicated group of residents. Congratulations on a job well done!
The ease of establishing a Fund within the North Dakota Community Foundation has allowed many communities to focus on local fund raising and granting. The rest is up to us!
