Scholarships for Students from Mandan

[] Kenneth & Leila Morris Dental Scholarship

The fund was established in 1982 by Leila Morris in loving memory of her late husband who practiced dentistry in Bismarck for many years. When establishing the scholarship, Mrs. Morris indicated she wanted to help young people interested in dentistry to fulfill their educational aspirations and that her late husband would have wanted the same.

Priorities for this scholarship are as follows:
1. First priority is for students from the Bismarck-Mandan area who are third of fourth year students of dentistry.
2. If there are no applicants from the Bismarck-Mandan area in any given year, the scholarship may be awarded to a student of dentistry from anywhere in North Dakota.
3. If according to the previous two preferences there are no eligible applicants, the scholarship may be awarded to a student of medicine from the Bismarck-Mandan area or if no applicants from the Bismarck-Mandan area, then statewide.

[] North Dakota Military Scholarship Fund

In February 1991, a Soldiers Relief Fund was established within the North Dakota Community Foundation to seek contributions from organizations and individuals within the Bismarck/Mandan area to assist National Guard and Army Reserve families who would be experiencing family emergencies or temporary financial problems due to the mobilization of these forces for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The swiftness of the end to these operations left a sum of money not needed as supposed. On May 16, 1991 the North Dakota Military Scholarship Fund was established with the NDCF with the remaining money.

Bismarck and Mandan Guard and Reserve members are eligible according to the guidelines below. The scholarship must be used for tuition at any institution of higher learning in the State of North Dakota, or any institution in any state which has tuition reciprocity with North Dakota. Financial need and academic ability are two factors which will be considered in making a decision as to the recipient. The recipient should intend to be a full-time student.

The following priorities will be used in the order listed:
1. Individuals who served on active duty between August 2, 1990 and the cease fire date with priority given to the military personnel who were stationed in the Middle East.
2. Spouses and children of those who served in the Middle East
3. Military personnel who were on active duty elsewhere in the world
Spouses and children of military personnel who were on active duty elsewhere in the world.
At such time as the above-stated guidelines no longer produce eligible applicants, the scholarship may be given to other active ND Guard and Reserve members, or their dependents, with first priority to the Bismarck Mandan area personnel.

[] Robert E. Chase Scholarship

The Robert E. Chase Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 by the Mandan Rotary Club to honor longtime Mandan businessman and community leader Robert E. Chase.

Robert E. Chase was born on January 1, 1916 at Garrison, the son of Lono I. and Anna F. (White) Chase. He graduated as valedictorian from Garrison High School in 1934. He attended Capital Commercial College in Bismarck and was employed with the M. B. Gilman Company (Auto-Truck Dealership), prior to serving in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in North Africa and Italy from 1942-45. While in the military he was awarded two battle stars. Following the war, he returned to Bismarck and was employed as a manager for the M. B. Gilman Company until 1955 when he purchased the Chevrolet dealership in Mandan. He owned and operated Chase Chevrolet until 1980.

Bob joined the Mandan Rotary Club in December 1955. In 1982 he served as Rotary District #5580 District Governor which included clubs from North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ontario, Canada. In 1984 he was elected County Commissioner of Morton County and served for ten years. He served as Commission Chairman in 1988 and 1993 and was elected by the County Commissioners of District 7 to serve on the ND Association of Counties Executive Board. He was a County Commissioner until his death in 1994.

Bob was known as a "People Person" who was generous of his time and was very service-oriented in the community. He enjoyed listening to opera and symphony music and working crossword puzzles. His strong faith and prayer helped him through his difficult times.

Each year, the Dollars for Scholars chapters from Hebron, Glen Ullin, New Salem, Flasher, and Mandan shall recommend recipients for the award. All Morton County Students are encouraged to apply with the first priority for the award for a Morton County student who is pursuing an education in the field of full time Christian Ministry and second priority is a Morton County student seeking a vocational/technical education.

[] Travis Hohbein Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 1998 by the family and friends of Travis Hohbein.

Travis Allen Hohbein was born in Mandan on October 28, 1980 to Allen & Lynn Hohbein. He attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Mandan Junior High and had just completed his Junior year at Mandan High. Travis was always involved in his family and helping out whenever a hand was needed. He also lived for his music. Travis would put any earnings he could into his car stereo, home stereo, and his wide variety of CD collection. Travis loved to play Frisbee Golf. As long as there was no snow, you could find him throwing his disc. When there was snow, Travis would be in the hills or mountains on his snowboard. Travis had many friends, older and younger, and many classmates whom he also shared special memories with.

Travis was caring, giving and a confidant to everyone. Not only this, Travis was a very special son, brother, uncle, great-grandson, grandson, nephew and friend to so many different people. If there was one thing he could promise each and every person that crossed his path, was that they would continue their journey with a piece of him – his smile.

The scholarship will financially assist those students from Mandan High School who have maintained a GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 = A scale. Preference will be given to students who are planning to study Electric Power, Electronics or Electrical Engineering and who demonstrate high personal character.
