  2004 - Resource Center Report

  Cher Hersrud, Director

Many exciting things happened in 2004. One of the most significant for the Resource Center was the advancement of the Directors Network. This group of nine experienced nonprofit directors is amazing. They represent all areas of nonprofit work and all geographic areas of North Dakota.
In response to a Request for Proposals, the Directors Network prepared and delivered multi-track, full day training for the Minnesota Resource Conservation and Development Association in September. The training covered all aspects of nonprofit management from understanding IRS 990 forms to marketing nonprofits. The training was well received and evaluated.
Short scripts were written by the Directors, for 10-minute tapes that were produced by the Minnesota RC&D Association for board training.
This same training will be made available to North Dakota nonprofit organizations in 2005. The Network will offer workshops in both Carrington and Richardton in April, with support from the Otto Bremer Foundation.
  Members of the Directors Network:
• Brenda Bjorlie, Pekin • Julie Gunkelman, Fargo
• Nancy Rakness, Minot • Linda Christman, Bismarck
• Deb Gebeke, Casselton • Tammy Simnioniw, Dickinson
• Kris Fehr, Dickinson • Heather Helgeson, Grand Forks
• Becky Meidinger, Ashley
Workshops and conference presentations filled the Spring and the Fall in 2004. The US Forest Service contracted with Tammy Simnioniw and me to offer two grants workshops. The workshops, held in Valley City and Dickinson were filled to capacity. Tammy and I also presented a workshop in Hettinger, sponsored by the Soil Conservation District.
Conference presentations ranged from the NDANO Conference to the Hunger Conference, and included ND Parks, COVS, and Marketplace. Sessions ranged from board training and development to local fundraising.
Attending the Alliance for Nonprofit Management Conference in Washington D.C. was, as always enlightening and a time for looking at the big picture. I continue to amaze people with stories of the commitment and volunteerism in North Dakota. The Points of Light Foundation will feature Pekin, North Dakota in one of its publications because of “my stories.” Someday, I will complete two personal goals: 1) I will write a book of “my stories;” 2) I will document the tremendous amount of volunteer effort that runs this state.
As I move into the 7th year of Resource Center operation, I have to thank those who make it possible for me to do a job I truly love. The Otto Bremer Foundation has supported the Center since its inception; they see the need, the value of the work, and they provide critical support.
Covering an entire state with one person is tough, but Kevin and Valerie at NDCF make it all easier. They listen, they support, and they encourage. This program has been effective, and it has made a difference. It would not have been possible without the support of NDCF.
