   Report of Chair & President

Each fall, we drive across North Dakota delivering grant checks in person to our Unrestricted Fund grantees. This process of driving from Williston to Hankinson and Cavalier to Hettinger may seem like a lot of traveling just to deliver grant checks. It is. However, if you were along with us, you would have seen some amazing projects and met an even more amazing group of people who make these projects happen.

NDCF Board Chairman, David “White Thunder” Trottier, Dunseith, Business Owner

You would have met Myrna McGregor from Litchville. She and her friends have remodeled a bowling alley and turned it into a Community Center. That sounds easy enough until you consider that they are the third committee in seven years to take on the task. As we visited with them about the project, we commented that it sometimes “takes someone with an iron fist and iron will to make these things happen”. Myrna’s friends immediately looked at each other and laughed. Almost in unison they said, “You hit the nail on the head!” Their response was said as much in admiration for the woman whose leadership carried the project forward as it was in gentle ribbing of their friend.

Kevin Dvorak, President and CEO, NDCF, Bismarck,
North Dakota

You would have met Rea Beattie of the Crown Butte area in rural Morton County. She virtually single-handedly put together the funding to build a playground for the children in her area. Vern Davis, Director of Morton County Parks said as he and Rea accepted our grant check, “she’s the one who pushed to make this Park happen, she deserves all the credit.”

These are but two examples of people we find all across the State - people with a vision, a goal and the chutzpah to make it happen. A wise community foundation executive once said that we should be people hunters. Not in the literal sense, but in the sense that we should look for people like Myrna and Rea and give them the resources that they need to succeed. That’s exactly what we try to do with our Unrestricted Grants; find those people who are making North Dakota a better place by improving their community or providing a needed service and grant what resources we have available to help them on their way.

It’s really our privilege and honor to assist in some small way to help hardworking North Dakotans accomplish good things for their community. Thanks to the generosity of people like you, we are able to make a difference; one project, one community, one person at a time.
