  2006 - Resource Center Report

  Cher Hersrud, Director

The continued support of the Otto Bremer Foundation and the North Dakota Community Foundation has allowed me to continue to operate the Resource Center for eight years; the years go by too quickly. I have traveled across North Dakota, working rural communities and nonprofit organizations, and my respect for North Dakotans is greater each year. Amazing work is accomplished, with little financial support and tremendous volunteer effort.
Communities across the state work hard to sustain themselves. Jud is the Village of Murals, and in Hope they raised a tremendous amount of money for a community project – with a golf tournament. In Ellendale, there is a small group of residents who have worked for years to build support for the preservation of their Opera House. There are so many examples of community success across the state.
Pekin has been my shining example; it is a community that decided to take charge – and they have created the biggest selling art show in the state, which also supports other communities in their area. The Nelson County Arts Council is managed by a hardworking board; a board that has developed policies and procedures, board manuals, and a specific board job description. Their organization is the source of many sample documents within my workshops and publications.
The women of the Directors’ Network have grown and increased their self-confidence. They have also expanded their service beyond their own The Network has provided practical nonprofit training across the state, with individual directors presenting at conferences.
A long term goal of mine will be completed in March. It has been a long, long time in development; however the North Dakota Nonprofit Report will be distributed in March. The Report contains current statistics about the sector, a listing of nonprofit organizations by county, and it includes profiles of the people and organizations that are the nonprofit sector in this It is my hope that by compiling and presenting this information, I can leverage increased support and increased understanding and respect for the North Dakota nonprofit sector. The Report will be distributed to foundations, corporations, state government, and individual donors and residents.
Another goal of mine has been to develop a newsletter for nonprofit organizations that is affordable and contains information that is helpful and applicable to nonprofit organizations. The first year was a little rocky, however this year’s Bulletin will be a concise reporting of news and issues that affect nonprofit organizations, and there are accountability issues that will affect the sector and we need to be prepared.
The nonprofit sector lost an amazing man this past year. Walt Odegaard built the Prairie Learning Center, and he also helped to build maintain the North Dakota Association of Nonprofit Organizations. The NDANO Conference will never be the same, without Walt’s hugs and wide smile.
