Dr. Henry Springer Memorial Scholarship

Fund Background: The Dr. Henry A. Springer Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1986. Dr. Springer was born in Dickinson, North Dakota on December 18, 1892. His parents, Nikolaus and Anna, were of German origin and lived on a small farm which produced primarily wheat and tobacco. At the age of 8, Henry left the farm to live in Dickinson with an older sister and to enroll in school. He graduated from Dickinson High School in 1912 and enrolled in the University of Cincinnati's medical college. Because the completion of his internship coincided with the United States enrollment in World War I, he joined the US Army Medical Corps. During his medical school years, he married Alma Pudenz in 1921. From 1919 to 1921 he practiced medicine in Dayton, but in 1922 he enrolled in the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Graduating in 1924 he returned to Cincinnati after a year of surgical residing in Ruthfordton, North Carolina. His years of practice were spent improving surgical techniques, instruments and devices as well as writing in various surgical journals. Education was always a focal point for him.
